Art now mirros the powerstructures of our globalized world. Within its bubble, objects are constantly imported and flipped into commodities to make us feel better.

As Boris Groys tells us instead of artworks, contemporary art now produces "information about art events." While the world is collapsing and the image culture of the internet is becoming our second nature, this constant flow of information calms us, it has a paliative effect.  

BURNRATE's information release is therefore that We Must Wipe Out Contemporary Art like ISIS from Palmyra.

Generated Memes, infectious videos and psychedelic tweets vs. Strawberry Cupcakes, pressed Coffee and coloring books. After burning the credits of cultural capital, is this what a return on investment will look like?

Philipp Herfeldt, ART INTO MEME

Born in Munich 1978th

Philipp Herfeldt is an Internet artist. For more than 15 years he has gained a unique standing in the LEGO online community under the name Brucewaynelego/ Toyshansolo. Posting on Flickr and youtube images and videos of his LEGO designs Herfeldt has achieved an audience of millions. In many ways Herfeldt is a ‚real‘ Post Internet artist as his whole work up until now has been disseminated on the Internet utilising the advances of Web 2.0.

Herfeldt is a perfect example of the consumer turned producer/ entrepreneur. His activities mark him asone of a new breed of creative individual: a Post Contemporary Art artist in that his work did not need the usual mainstream art world to gain a vast international audience. Herfeldt estimates his youtube videos have received 35 Million views. However he has now taken down most of these videos as others were ‚stealing‘ them to repost online to feed the shared communal addiction to getting ‚hits‘. Also he says he stopped making videos because: “The young kids just make them better now.”

Herfeldt is now entering the visual arts realm, with this solo exhibition, as an individual who is expert in art history but also an expert ‚fan boy‘ of popular culture. He is entering Art as a new type of artist using LEGO as his material means of making; raiding the ‚toolbox‘ of iconic art images which by now have become yet more memes. Rather than using past art in an 80s Appropriation sense, this artist is after an immersive rather than ‚critical‘ relationship with culture. Herfeldt is an artist who leaves low and high culture deliberately behind.

AS OF MAY, 2014 INTERNET CITIZENS NOW UPLOAD AND SHARE OVER 1.8 BILLION PHOTOS EACH DAY.  ALL ART IS NOW JPEG.

It is no longer necessary to review popular music.  And it is certainly no longer necessary to discuss Contemporary Art.  It doesn’t matter if Contemporary Art is Bad or Good. Even to say it all looks the same; has a distinct “look” or house style is irrelevant.  

BURNRATE was founded to investigate value in Contemporary Art. BURNRATE seeks to set up a soft polemic between objects from Design and the” real world” on relation to those objects placed into Art. However we now acknowledge that our thoughts have been superseded by the enormity of the Internet.  Our values are now totally relative.
